Sharon Appel is a strategy executive with a proven track record in achieving growth in the healthcare industry with expertise in hospitals, managed care, government programs (Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, VA Choice), and senior living.
Sharon specializes in strategic planning for managed care organizations and large hospital systems. Previously, Sharon was a Vice President, Strategy and Development, at Centene Corporation, a leading managed care company with annual revenue of $48 billion. Centene’s federal, state, and commercial insurance plans support over 14 million people.
At Centene, Sharon led strategic and business planning to grow government health care programs in the Federal Services division. These programs included the TRICARE Program (managed care services supporting 3 million military service members and their families); the Department of Veterans Affairs Patient Centered Community Care/Choice program (provider network management and customer service for 5 million Veterans); and the Military & Family Life Counseling Program (behavioral health services provided at 100 military installations nationally and internationally).
Prior to joining Centene, Sharon led corporate planning and business development for all clinical service areas at Suburban Hospital/Johns Hopkins Medicine. She was instrumental in developing Suburban Hospital’s first open heart surgery program in conjunction with Johns Hopkins and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
Sharon received her MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and her BA from Barnard College/Columbia University.
